Rule of thumb is, 4 parts WATER to 1 part GRITS.
Basic recipe for grits.
1/2 cup grits
2 cups water
1 Tbs. butter
Salt to taste (1/2 tsp. + or -)
In a heavy sauce pan, pour grits into cool water, stir and add salt. Bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat, cover and cook until thick and creamy (stir often). You may need to add (hot) water if it gets to thick.
Options: Substitute one part of water with milk.
Add cheese or cooked bacon or cooked sausage.
